FAVOURITES GOOD DAY

FINE RACING AT FEILDING TARANAKI HORSES PROMINENT

RIDER “OUT” FOR SIX MONTHS

(By Telegraph—From “Childers.”) FEILDING, April 21.

The Feilding meeting was favoured by perfect weather, for the opening of the Easter meeting, and favourites, or well-backed horses, had a splendid day, ho fewer than 50 per cent, of the actual first choice of the public supplying the winners. No dividend reached double figures, and the best price of the day was paid by Gold Mag in the last- race. Pladie realised expectations by scoring well in the Manchester Handicap, while The Tiger won the open sprint in a field that was reduced to five by a similar number of scratchings. Gold Mag won) the open seven furlongs, and the two-year-old race was Avon by Severe.

The riding of R, W. Savage, the apprentice jockey attached to the New Plymouth stable of 11. Dulieu was ono of* the features of the meeting.

He not only won a double for the stable with Gold Mission and Ihc Tiger but lie was also successful on Gold 'Mag, and third on Romp Along. R. Iteed rode two winners, Severe and Round Score, and W. J. Broughton also rodq two, Pladie and Orae. Broughton was also second on no fewer than three occasions. An inquiry was held after the hurdle race into the running of tjio favourite Sunny Song. The judicial stewards came to the decision that the marc was not run on her merits, and six months’ disqualification was imposed upon the jockey- J. Walsh. The track was in excellent order, and times were good, while the attendance was very large: The totalisator returns were £15,0i-, as compared with £14,470 10s last Easter Saturday, an increase of £596 10s.

MANGAONE HANDICAP. Of £2OO. Six furlongs. 3 The Tiger, 7.8 (Savage) 1 4 Bodyline, 7.0 (Tattcrsall) ... 2 1 Rimghal, 7.11 (W. Broughton) 3 Also- started: 2 Souchong S.B, 5 Lady Kyra 7.11. Neck; neck. Time, 1.13 3-5. Souchong and Boughal made the pace to the straight, where Hie Tiger and Bodyline were handy. At the distance Bodyline, Boughal and The Tiger were in for a win, but the lastnamed, finishing solidly’, won narrowly in a blanket finish. 7.7. Half a length; a length. Time, 2.7 4-5.

TAONUI NURSERY. Of £l3O. Five furlongs. 1 Severe, 9.4 (Reed) 1' 2 Finnesko, 7.8 (W. Broughton) 2 4 Rompalong, 7.2 (Savage) ... 3 Also started • 1 Entail 7.8, 1 Lattice 7.2, 3 Alchemic 8.4, 0 Matrimony 7.2, 7 Surprise Item 7.2. Three-quarters of a length; length and a-half. Time, 1.3 1-5.'

Severe, splendidly handled by Rccd, attended Surprise Item to the straight, where she took command. Finnesko challenged but failed by the best part of a length.

ONEPUHI HACK HANDICAP. Of £l3O. One mile and a-quarter. 1 Round Score, 8.12 (Reed) .r. 1 5 Onewhetu, 8.8 (Shields) 2 3 Ingenuity, 8.9 (B. H. Morris) 3 Also started: 4 Taliurangi 9.1, 2 Timorous 8.5, 6 Sir Romeo 7.9, 7 Count Willonyx 7.9, S Wahinc Nui

HALCOMBE HANDICAP. Of £l-50. Sevcp furlongs. 7 Gold Mag 7.11 (Savfige) ... 1 .2 Boughal, 8.7 (W. Broughton) 2 4 Midian, 8.5 (Reed) 3 Also started: G Sanguine King 9.0, 5 Pomp 8.12, 3 Refresher 8.4, 1 Limulus 8.3', 8 True Shaft 7.11. ■Boughal, Limulus and Sanguine King led at the half-mile, but Gold Mag, who had dropped back, finished fast to win by half a length from Boughal, who was a similar distance from Midian.

The Tiger 1 Finishes Well. The promising young New Plymouth -apprentice W. Savage scored his second win for the day when lie won on The -Tiger. Souchong was first to show out from Boughal, this pair racing together out in front over the early stages from The Tiger with u. gap of two lengths back to Bodyline and Lady Kyra three lengths further back. Souchong cracked up after the fast pace , set and was- beaten at the straight entrance, although he was still practically on terms with Boughal just ahead of The Tiger, who had raced up on the outside and Bodyliue. In a'stirring finish The Tiger won by a neck from Bodylme, with short heads only separating the latter from Boughal and’ Lady Kyra. Souchong was a. couple of lengths away last. The Tiger won handsomely, as at New Plymouth, responding well to the method of riding him in | behind. Bodylinc looked rather unlucky, and so did Lady Kyra, who covered a fair amount of extra ground. Boughal made a solid showing, but Souchong stopped badly. •Severe bore out her recent good form by winning handsomely. Finnesko and Severe were actually the first to make a move, but Surprise Item then put in a fast run to go to the front from Severe, Finnesko and Alchemic, this still being the order into the straight. Once headed for home, Severe soon had Surprise Item’s measure and, although Finnesko finished solidly, the Awapuni filly hung on well to win by three-quarters of a length. Itonipalong just got up iu time to cut Surprise Item out of third money. Then came Alchemic and Entail. Severe carried her weight well and she is undoubtedly a high-class youngster. Finnesko looks to be a good sort in the making, for lie was not suited by the turning track. Surprise Item showed a fine turn of speed 1 and is a

likely improver. Rompalong was staying on at the end. ■ ...

Confidently ridden by Roy Reed, Round Score was well back early, but came ;witk a well-sustained run .aver the final three furlongs to win in good style. Setting a very fast pace, Wahinc Nui led out of the straight from Count Willonyx, One Whetu and Sir Romeo. Down the back stretch Wahinc Nui had the field well strung out, being four lengths ahead of Count Willonyx, with Ono Whclu a similar distance back and a further gap to Taliurangi and Timorous, with Round 'Score and Ingenuity at the tail of the field. Ingenuity and Round Seorc commenced a run together three furlongs from home and, crossing the top, One Whetu had gathered in tuc tiring Wahinc ,Nui. One Whetu led into the straight from Wahine Nui, Taliurangi and Timorous, but Round Score got up in time to beat the Ilawcra gelding by half a length. Ingenuity was a length away third, Wahinc Nui fourth, Taliurangi and Count Willonyx next. Round Score won well, being, suited by the patient manner in which he was ridden. One Whetu ran a very solid race and' so did Ingenuity, who was on the outside of Round Score all the way. Wahinc Nui was indifferently handled, being set an impossible task. Tahurangi ran only moderately.

Another to Savage. Gold Mag scored a surprise win iu the final event, being well handled by Savage, who rode his third winner during the day. After considerable delay at the start, the field got away in good style, for the first part Limulus, Boughal and Sanguine King racing together in line. Boughal then drew away slightly to jead Sanguine King, Limulus and Refresher (in line), this being the order crossing the top. Refresher joined Boughal entering the straight, but the latter then shot away again and looked to be winning easily with only, half a furlong to go. However, Gold Mag finished fast to get up in time to win by half a length, Midian being a similar distance back third. Pomp was fourth, followed by Refresher and Sanguine King. Gold Mag: put up a very pleasing performance, although he was aided considerably by receiving -an excellent passage. Boughal "made another creditable showing, while Midian ran a solid race,
