MOUNT EGMONT POPULAR

OVER 50 CLIMB TO SUMMIT LARGE INFLUX OF VISITORS/ Mt. Egmont was popular over the week-end, and on Saturday more than fifty persons climbed to the summit from the Dawson Falls hostel. This Easter has seen one of the greatest influxes to Egmont National Park for time, particularly to Dawson Falls, two large parties from Auckland- and Wellington .being among the visitors. Twenty-nine members of the Paua Clun, Wellington, arrived at Dawson Falls on Friday and 30 members from the Auckland Alpine Sports Club arrived later. The number of climbers from the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club over the week-end was also large, several having lived at Syme Hut on Fantham’s Peak for three days. Conditions ivere good for climbing on Saturday, except for the last 500 feet, where the ice-glazed scoria required care in crossing.

The number of visitors and cars which arrived at Dawson Falls has been astonishing, and each day picnic parties have been present in abundance. Yesterday the conditions were excellent, despite a light shower of rain just before mid-day. In the old hostel every bunk is occupied and makeshifts have been spread over a considerable portion of the floor. A dance was held on Saturday night. The road to North Mt. Egmont hostel bore a constant stream of cars yesterday from early morning to late afternoon, in spite of overcast skies, and the hostel is also well Ailed with visit* , ors. The old 'house was the meeca for f many climbers and several parties visited the summit, including visitors from ■■ England and a combined Farmers’ Co-* operative Society party. ! One party from Auckland arrived at North Egmont' from Dawson Falls yesterday after a traverse of the summit and returned via Stratford house, while a large number climbed to the top from the Stratford house.

Taranaki Alpine Club members spent the day completing the furnishings of the Humphries Castle hut and providing tea for interested visitors. Last night the weather -was clearing arid promised a fine day.
