Talk of Millions of Pounds in Gold Mining Venture
RIGHT TO PROSPECT SOUGHT
“CAPITAL IN THE AIR”
(Bv Telegraph—Pres* Association.) BLENHEIM, To-day
In the Warden’s Court this morning Mr T. E. Maunsell declined an application by Ernest Herbert Booker, of Wellington, solicitor, for a prospecting license over an area of 90 acres of the adjoining property of Mahakipawa Goldfields Ltd.
Applicant’s counsel said it was the brokers’ idea to secure English capital to finance a big dredging undertaking over 500 acres of the Mahakipawa arm of the sound facing Mahakipawa, and portion of the Cawte Estate situated between the sea and the 99 acres now applied for. He assorted that it was not a matter of thousands of pounds, but of millions.
Under cross-examination by counsel for Mahakipawa Goldfields, who objected, the applicant admitted that he and his colleagues had not yet got the English capital.
In giving his decision the Warden said he considered the matter of English capital absolutely in the air, and expert evidence showed that the dredging proposition on the 99 acres applied for was unpractieable. For that reason the application was declined.
It was intimated that an appeal might be lodged. Mahakipawa Goldfields’ application for leave to enter on the land and peg a claim was adjourned to March 6, the Warden indicating that he would protect their priority.
