Hawkes, who "nave arrived from Blenheim on transfer as officers in charge of the Hawera Corps in place of Adjutant and Airs W. T. Armstrong, who have gone to AVanganui. The hall was well filled and leaders of Army work in every department’ conveyed to Mr and Airs Hawkes an expression of their continued loyalty to the cause. Proceedings were conducted by the Corps Treasurer, Sister A. Murlcy, who apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Alayor of Hawera (Air J. E. Campbell). A't his request, however, Sister Alorley conveyed to Airland Airs Hawkes greetings on behalf of the citizens of Hawera and their best wishes for an enjoyable stay in their midst. Adjutant and Airs Hawkes are bofn very well known for choir work in the Army in most parts of New Zealand, and there are few of l7ie main centres in which they have not been stationed at some time in their career. Some years ago Adjutant Hawkes was in charge of the Stratford Corps and a little later was at Eltham. In more recent years he was at AVanganui and during the slump period, when the river city suffered more severely than perhaps most other towns, lie performed a valuable service to the community in connection with the relief of distress. As a student of the Bible he is widely known and his powers of oratory as a preacher of the Gospel has earned for him favourable recognition.

Among the speakers who extended a welcome to Adjutant and Mrs Hawkes and a hand in friendship, was Air T. J. Hurrell, who attended the function as a representative of the Alethodist Church congregation. He apologised for the absence of the Rev. Basil Aletson on account of illness and also for the absence of other members of the 1 law era Ministers’ Association. Air Hurrell said that Adjutant and Airs Hawkes would find the people warmhearted and the town itself a pleasant place in which to make their home. He also spoke of the spirit of unity which characterised the work of the Protestant Churches in Hawera and said that Adjutant Hawkes would find that spirit of unity and fellowship, strong within the ranks of the Alinister’s Association, of which lie was entitled to become a member. On behalf of the Army Band, Bandsman T. Dow die welcomed Adjutant and Mrs Hawkes and the A’onng People’s Sergeant-Major (Sister A. Johns') also spoke on behalf of Llie Sunday School and the Home League. The new officers were welcomed formally on behalf of the whole Corps by Sister Alorley. ; The first to respond was Airs! Hawkes, who said that she felt for-1

tilled in the new work by the wan nth of the Corps’ welcome.

Adjutant Hawkes in acknowledging the remarks of the several speakers, stressed the importance of the work clone b.v the leaders in various departments. He paid a compliment to Sister Money on her conduct of the fneeting. There was no Church or Army Corps that could succeed without tHe services of its local officers, he said. He looked forward to his association with the ministers of the Hawera churches and trusted that the harmonious relationship would be maintained.

During the evening the band played the selection, “The Great Call,” and “Hastings,” as well as the accompaniments for the hymns, “Salvation 0 the Joyful Sound,” and “God is Love,” in which the congregation joined in singing. There were two choruses, a cornet duet, “Hosanna,” by Bandsmen L. Beacon and It. Thomson and a vocal solo, “Love Lifted Me” by Bandsman Thompson. Prayers were led by Bandsman J. Johns and Sister Morlcy. After the meeting supper was served by the ladies.
