TO AUSTRALIA IN CANOE
YOUNG ENGLISHMAN’S PLANS VOYAGE OF 33,000 MILES (By Air Mail.) (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, Dec. 2!). Somewhere about the New Year ol 1938—wind, weather find luck permitting—a young Englishman hopes to paddfe his own canoe into Sydney Harbour and complete a 33,000 miles voyage on which he is soon to embark. The adventurous canoeist is Colin Sullivan , aged 25. He lives at Hereford, pretty well in the centre of England. Though so far inland, Sullivan is no stranger to the sea. This week he completed a trip in his canoe from London, round the South coast, with its many treacherous currents, and upriver to his native town. This success lias fired liis ambition, and he is not going to be satisfied with anything less than a voyage to Australia. He expects it will take him about three years. After that, he may go on to New Zealand. Sulivan's canoe is just big enough to hold himself and his kit. When the wind is favourable he slips the paddle and hoists a sail. The whole craft is light enough to be carried on his back if necessary.
