ALASKAN TOWN BURIED
TWO MILLION DOLLARS LOSS. TWO KILLED BY DYNAMITE. (United Press issxiiation—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) VANCOUVER!, Sept. 18. Two Eskimos were burned to death and a number of white persons were injured by dynamite blasts in efforts to check a fire which destroyed the Alaskan town of Nome to-day. The loss is estimated at about two million dollars.
Only two main business buildings and a few remote residences escaped. Upwards of 400 persons are hemeless and the food question is severe. Nome will be ice-bound for eight months in six weeks’ time. The town had a population of about 12,000 in the Klondyke gold rush days, 'but it now has a total of about 1500 persons. ... The Federal Government has ordered coastguard vessels to rush to the aid of the stricken town. A small supply cf food was salved from the grocery stores.
