CHEVIOT FARMER DROWNED

Malcolm Bruce Smith, a farmer of Cheviot /aged 37, was drowned while fording the Waiau River about 4.20 p.m, to-day. Smith with a boy, Lester Pain, aged 13, was driving cows over the. river, which. was fairly low. AH the cows save two had been driven across, and Smith went back for these. He was driving them over when Pain saw horse and rider disappear. They reappeared with Smith clinging to the saddle, but again disappeared, and Smith was not seen again. It is believed tne horse stepped over a ledge into a deep pool.
