FIREMEN IN COMPETITION

ANNUAL EVENTS' AT HAWERA. CONTEST FOR BONE CUP. The members of the Hawera Volunteer Fire Brigade during the week-end held the annual three-men motor events for the Bone Cup, the trophy presented by Mr L. A. Bone, chairman of the Hawera Fire Board. The names of the winning team are engraved upon the base of the cup, which cannot be won outright. Each of the three men received a gold medal, which this year were donated by Messrs C. Cummings, J. Goodwin and H. Sargent. In view of the fact that the United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand recently decided to hold a demonstration in Blenheim early in 1935, and the possibility oi the Hawera brigade being represented by a five-man team, the competition in each event was keenly contested under the supervision of Superintendent A. Morrison, Deputy-Superintendent J. Zinsli, and Messrs A. E. Stevens, C. Perrett. B. Johnston, J. N. Strother and 0. Cummings; The first event, running out a single delivery length of hose from the pump and preparing a suction length from a sump, resulted: Firemen V. Powell, R. Duncan and J. Hefford, 14 2-ssec, 1; Fireman R. Gates, C. Perrett and J. Moore, 16sec, 2; Foreman T. Dowdle, Firemen J. Peacock and F. Gray, 16 2-ssec, 3. Second event, preparing two delivery lengths of hose through the pump, with two feeder lengths connected: Fireman Gates, Perrett and Moore, 25sec, 1; Foreman E. Hart, Firemen H. Pettett and N. Hatcher, 26 2-5 sec, 2; Firemen L. Warner, H. Fredericks and J. Moore, 26 3-ssec, 3.

Third event, preparing two delivery lengths direct from the water main: Firemen Powell, Duncan and Hefford, 18 3-ssec, 1; Firemen Gates, Perrett and Moore, 20 4-ssee, 2; Foreman Hart. Firemen H. Pettett and Hatcher. 22 l-ssec, 3. Final result: Firemen Gates, Perrett and Moore, 30 points, 1, winner o c cup and medals; Firemen Powell, Duncan and Hefford, 28 points, 2. Foreman Hart, Firemen Pettett and Hatcher, 20 points, 3. Previous winners of the cup were: 1928, Firemen R. Seager, J. Kelsen and A. Hart; 1929, Firemen E. Hart, T. Dowdle and O.
