CELEBRATIONS AT OKAIAWA

SCHOOL’S GOLDEN JUBILEE. CONCLUSION LAST EVENING. SOCIAL AND DANCE IN HALL. The celebrations in connection with the Okaiawa school’s golden jubilet concluded last evening with a social and dance in the town hall. The attendance was easily a record for the distinct and a large number of ole pupils and former teachers were among chose present. The roads in the township were brilliantly illuminated and beliagged, ana the hall was a blaze of coloured lights, with a wealth of streamers, greener} and flowers, the work of an energetic committee of ladies. The colours were lemon and green, with lamp shades ol the same colours, and the effect was most striking. The supper room wae arranged as a comfortable lounge, with easy chairs for the elder people, some of whom played cards. In the suppei room the decorations, which were carried out by the Misses Betts, were particularly effective. . Multi-coloured streamers of blue, l’ed, yellow and green were suspended across the room and draped with an artistic effect. Round the walls were mirrors and pictures, set in greenery and spring dooms, with pretty pot plants with imitation butterflies suspended in the branches During the evening items were given by Mrs. T. Sunderland and Messrs F. Silver and A. _-Cottrell (.songs) and Miss N. Kent (recitations), while dancing was enjoyed to music bj McNeill’s orchestra, Messrs D. Johnston and Roy Green were M.C-.’s. A dainty supper served by a large committee of ladies concluded a liappj evening. During the afternoon celebrations Mr H. Betts planted a totara tree in front of the school to commemorate the occasion. Afternoon tea was served •on the lawn and the opportunity given all who were associated with the school to renew old acquaintances and to discuss their recollections of the early days. Appreciated selections were rendered by the Hawera Pipe Band and the Hawera Technical School Band. A novel and modern touch was added to the proceedings in the broadcast of souvenir cards from a ’plane piloted by Mir Brian Haybittle. The pilot first executed a number of stunts over the grounds, and swooping down scattered cards bearing the following inscription: “1883-1933: Okaiawa school jubilee : A message from the .sky. H elcome to all odd pupils and residents. Wishing you a. successful and happy re-union. Delivered by aeroplane, September 29, 1933.’.’
