DEMONSTRATION FARMING

W AIM ATE WEST AREA. SUCCESS AT FIELD DAY. There was an attendance of about forty farmers from various parts of the’ district at the Waimate West demonstration area yesterday, to take part in a field day and demonstration of the work done on the farm. Air J. M. Smith and Mr C. Haynes, of the Agricultural Department, were m charge and made the afternoon most interesting and instructive. Mr Smith said the pastures generally liail been well maintained and the 10tation sections -wiere providing a wealth of fresh green posture for tin slock, of which there were sixty cows going through the' shed and in addi tion bulls, horses and pigs. Referring to the tower .silo, Sir Smith said i> had been proved that this would labetter under the lee of a Link ana perhaps a hillside pit was to be pieferred. The walls of the tower were uot sufficiently thick to keep an e ’cn temperature and consequently the hot material drew awav from the walls nil created some waste. Members of the party inspected the piggeries and the milking shed and found all in first-class prefer and the stock in excellent condition. At the conclusion a committee cl ladies—Mesdames. E. J. Betts. E. G Betts. A. Paterson and Miss Paterson—entertained all at afternoon lea. Appreciation of this hospitality ancl also "4 the good work of*Messns Smith end Haynes was expressed by Air D. j* Wards, of Okaiawa, and votes oi thanks were earned by acclamation. Mi- Wards in liiis remarks, eulogised the wo) !’. bt the committee members for their excellent service. He said he had not seen the farm for several years and noceu an' unusual improve meat. The committee members gave their service freely and gratuitously to the farm. Mr Smith briefly acknowledged the complimentary remarks.
