WOMEN’S INSTITUES

TURUTURiU ASSEMBLY DRIAMA CIRCLE FORMED The monthly meeting of the Turutnru Women’s Institute was held in the racecourse tearooms on Wednesday. Mrs W. H. James presided over an attendance of .50 members and visitors. The remits to be submitted at the half-yearly conference were discussed, and the delegates instructed as to voting. A drama circle was formed with the object of entering in the Women’s institute festival of drama to he held in Hawera in November.

Sister Small gave a very interesting talk on the history and work of the Red Cross Society. She also demonstrated sick-room appliances and bandaging. A demonstration on making tin-foil pictures was given by Mrs Meharry. During the afternoon tea a roll call “Mv earliest memory” was held.

The competition for the best article made from six pennyworth of material was won by Mrs D. McNeil with a knitted bonnet and bootees, Mrs Eden being second- with a- beach bag and ill’s Garrard third with ail embroidered guest towel.

Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Eden, Davies and Kearns. KAPONGA MEETING NEW PRESIDENT ELECTED (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Kaponga Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall. on Wednesday afternoon. There was an excellent attendance of members. In the absence of the president Mrs R. D. Dagg occupied the chair. Owing to. continued iJ 1-health the president (Mrs C. H. Brewer) forwarded her resignation, which was accepted with deep regret. Mrs Brewer has beer, president of the institute since its inception and is also a member of the council of the Taranaki Federation of Women’s Institutes. Mrs R. D. Dagg was subsequently elected to. the position of president for the remainder of the year. Mr V. C. Davies, New Plymouth, gave an interesting address of the raising and propagation of trees and shrubs.

A competition for the best arranged vase of daffodils was won by Miss Wemyss, with Mrs Boyle second and Mrs J. Brown third. For the best jar of marmalade Mrs J. Brown was first, Mrs. BOyle second and Mrs J. Gardner third. Owing to the large increase in membership it was decided that future meetings would be held in the Parish Hall. Hostesses for the afternoon were the Misses Dawson and Crowley.
