PATEA DISTRICT SPORTS

PUBLIC SCHOOL ATHLETICS. REVIEW OF THE YEAR. The annual meeting' of the Patea and District Public Schools-' Amateur Athletic Association was held on Saturday evening there being present Messrs D. Hurley, L. Hunt, G. Marshall, J. Hamblyn, C. R. Honeyfield, P. Palmer, D. Jillett, A. Sadler, W IL Walton, E. P. Hemingway and J. A. Wither, hon. secretary. Mr W. M. Southcombe presided. The ■thirteenth annual report stressed the importance of the work being done by the association. Entries for the March sports were just on 1500 and at the August tournament the only schools not represented were -Opaku and Mokoia. The financial position was reported to be strong and there were enough medals on hand to cover two years sports meetings. Congratulations were tendered to the committee on the success of the cricket and rounders, the swimming tourney, the winning of the 'seaside society’s cup by Richards, ■of Patea, the girls ’ championship by Maire Eangi, of Whenualciira, and the Strout’s Cup by the Whenuakura School. The tourney in August was* most successful, the football being won by Kolii (senior) and Whakamara (junior). It was urged that the Ivugbj Union should foster primary school football much more than was the case at present. “During the year two cups for swimming and seven miniatures were received from the Herbert'Smith Trust. The public were thanked for support of the association, the Press for many kindnesses and much assistance, the Domain Board for the use of the Domain, the Borough Council for the use of the meeting room and all those who have worked for the good of the 1 association and have helped with its

various activities. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, Mr Jillett paid tribute to the sterling work done for the association during the past year, by the retiring president, Mr D. Hurley,' and the honorary secretary Mr Wither. The following officers were elected: patron, Mr E.' F. Hemingway; -pre sident, Mr Jillett (Manutahi); vice- j presidents, as formerly with Rev. Father Broughton substituted for Rev. Father Hegartv; auditor, .Mr Hemingwav; committee, all officers and a teacher from each school. Subscription 2s, same as formerly. In view of transport difficulties it [was decided .that the cricket cup become a challenge cup, Patea . School being the holders, and a committee of

the president and secretarywasauthorised to draw up. challenge conditions. The (Herbert Smith trustees are to be requested to donate two additional cups. The secretary was authorised to arrange a one-day tournament for J rounders. On the recommendation o± Mr Jillett it was decided that lifesaving instruction and competitions 'be introduced into the sporting curriculum of the association.
