RUST IN WHEAT CROP

MANAWATU OUTBREAK ' PARTICULARLY' BAD YEAR (By Telegraph—Press Association). PALMERSTON N., Feb. IS. It is estimated that there will be'a loss of fiom 15 to 20 per cent, of the best yields and total destruction in other eases as the result of rust in what promised to be a wheat yield in the Manawatu and Rangitikei districts. Discussing the outbreak of rust, Mr J.'C. Niell, field mycologist of the plant research station, said that apart, from the losses in yield a further effect was to lower the quality of the sample. In previous years there had ,not been much severe loss, but now milling wheat was at a substantial premium over fowl wheat. Consequently- .the rust-infected yield would be much less profitable owing to the .sample not being up to milling standard through the grain being shrivelled and discoloured. The present year was a particularly bad one for rust.
