RUSSO-CANADIAN BARTER
OIL AND COAL FOR CATTLE STATE GUARANTEE REQUESTED GOVERNMENT MAY APPROVE. HINT BY PRIME MINISTER. (United Press association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.? Received 2.30 p.m. to-day. OTTAWA, Jan. 31. The Canadaian Government was asked to guarantee Russian seven per cent bonds to a maximum of 4,000,000 dollars to swing, an 8,000,000 dollars barter of Canadian cattle for Russian, oil and coal. The Prime Minister (Mr R. B. Beunett) told the Canadian Hou.se of Commons to-day that the proposal was made by a" Winnipeg syndicate. No agreement had been signed with the Russian authorities by the syndicate. Since the barter proposal first was laid before the Government last October the Winnipeg syndicate bad not given evidence of the bona fides on Russia’s, part, said Mr Bennett. At present the proposal remained there, though be indicated there wa,s a slight possibility of its receiving the Government’s approval.
