LOCAL AND PERSONAL

Warm and boisterous northerly winds have prevailed throughout South Taranaki since Monday and dust blown from inland areas has rendered outdoor conditions most unpleasant besides increasing household- duties indoors. On Monday evening and again yesterday, however, intermittent showers served the double purpose of cleansing the atmosphere and refreshing gardens and pastures. Air temperatures in Hawera have been confined within the range of approximately eight points—66 minimum and 74 maximum. The case of a small family in dire distress has been brought to- the- notice of the Salvation Army Corps in Hawera and an appeal i;s made by Adjutant H. Mackenzie, through the “Hawera Star,” for assistance. A double bed and mattress, blankets, table and chairs and essential crockery are 'required urgently and- Hawera residents desirous of donating any el these goods from their homos _are asked to communicate with the adjutant either by post or by telephone No. 2420.
