Resenting an increa.se in the petrol tax and the brutal measures adopted by the police in .seizing cars for default in payment, the city taxi-drivers concentrated on the crossroads at St. Stephen’s Cathedral and formed cars into barricades and stopped the whole city traffic during the busiest hours. Troops were called out to enable the police to be released for street duty •owing to the paralysis of traffic. Troops with fixed bayonets also arrived on the scene. Armoured cars were ■used to drag the taxis off the main streets, this practically ending the strike.
