A large public meeting representing local bodies and the unemployed was held inj the Town Hall to-night to. protest at the inadequacy of the unemployment relief allocation. The speakers included the'Mayors of Grey mouth Itunanga. and Brunner, the chairman of the GobdCn Town Board, and representatives -of the county, also , the unemployed and Labour organisations. A "motion was. moved . ‘.‘That the meeting ,strong!y protests the inadequate relief money m this district and urges the board to make an immediate increase; that the Minister be asked to place Grey mouth in the same category as the main centres for relief purposes, as the cost, of living is far greater here than in the cities; that the Minister be asked to review all schemes with a view to removing the hardship of the ‘stand' down’ or short week, but this not to be done at the expense of the other three weeks.”

An amendment, however, was carried as follows : “That this meeting make a. definite request to the Government at once to cancel all relie! work and in lieu thereof pay sustenance as provided by the Unemployment Act.”
