POPULARITY WITH PUBLIC NOT REDUCED J3Y DEPRESSION The opinion that the depression had not resulted in reduced attendances at picture theatres-was expressed by Mr M. J. Moodabe, governing director or Amalgamated Theatres, Limited, on Saturday, in reference to a statement (published on Tuesday) by the New Zealand Motion Picture Exhibitors Association that over IQO theatres had been closed in the Dominion m the past two and a-half years. “The public are even keener than in the past for picture entertainment,’ said Mr Moodabe. “Our experience with a large circuit that penetrates all over New Zealand is that the slump has added to the picture theatre patronage, as it is the one form of permanent entertainment that the public can afford. Most of the -shows that have closed are in back-blocks districts, where the attendances at the best of times would not warrant the installation of expensive modern talking equipment.
