SLUMP IN WHISKY TRADE
DISTILLERS SUSPEND WORK. SEQUEL TO HIGH DUTY. (United Pres* Asao:!atlou—By Electric Tdegra Copyright.) Received 11.30 a.m. to-day. LONDON, Sept. 4. Owing to the crushing duty 78 Scottish potmalt distillers have agreed to make no whisky during the coming season, while IS distillers outside the combine will work only short time, causing a thousand, to become unemployed. The warehouses are full, hut the duty of 72s 6cl on each gallon of whisky, costing 3s 6d to produce, has caused such a slump in sales that the closing of the distilleries is unavoidable.
