SPEED IN LAND ’PLANE
RECORD AGAIN BEATEN OVER 297, MILES AN HOUR, United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) NEW YORK, Sept. 3. Major James Doolittle at Cleveland set a world land ’plane speed record of 297.287 miles an hour over a kilometi-e course to-day at the- national races. He carried a barograph to make, the record official. After breaking the record he continued flying over the course, flashing past the pylons on the fifth lap at 306 miles an hour.
Major Doolittle defeated the record of 293.193 miles an hour set two days previously. Plis land ’plane speed, of course, is far behind the seaplane record established by Flight-Lieutenant Stainforfch in the Schneider Cup—an average over the 3000 kilometres of 379 miles an (hour and a maximum speed of 40S.S miles.
