SMALL FARM SCHEME.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR’S OUTLINE.

Mr A. H. Cockayne, assistant-Direc-tor-General of tha Department of Agriculure and chief executive officer of the small farm scheme, accompanied by Mr W. J. McCulloch (West Coast district executive officer) and Mr H. R. Denize, visited Eltham on Thursday night for the purpose of explaining the small farm scheme for the relief of unemployment. The meeting was held in the Borough Council Chambers and was well attended by farmers and others interested. The Mayor (Mr I. J. Bridger) presided, and associated with him was. Mr J. Cocker, president of the Eltham branch of the Farmers’ Union. Mr Cockayne gave an interesting and informative outline of the whole scheme, after which a number of questions and enquiries l were made. On the motion of Mr Cocker a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Cockayne. COMMUNITY SING. The Eltham Red Cross Society has arranged for a free picture entertainment and community sing to be conduced by Mr Silver (Eltham) and Mr Simpison (Hawera) on Monday night next. A collection will he-taken in aid of the relief funds of the society.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

COMMITTEE MEETING HELD

A' meeting of the committee of the recently-formed Eltha-m Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday evening in the Mayor’s room.. Mrs I. J. Bridger (president) presiding. Those present were Mesdames Blackman, Fountaine, Valintine, Manley, Hlllmer, Guthrie. Clifford Jones and Sister Brown. Apologies were received from Mesdames Goldsmith and Cocker. Two new members were added to the committee, Mesdames E. E. Carter and McKay. Mrs Clifford Jones was 1 appointed secretary. It was unanimously agreed that all meetings of the institute be held in Mr Wilkinson’s room, above Morton’s, on the fourth Wednesday in each month, the first taking nlace on June 22- at 7.30 o.m. All members are kindly requested to bring their own cup and saucer. , As there is every indication of the membership being a. large one, the conrmitttee trusts that not only will the ■activities of the institute he instructive but a source of interest and 1 enjoyment to all concerned.
