YOUNG PEOPLE’S INSTITUTE

ST. JOHN’S MEMBERS IN DEBATE.

On Wednesday evening the St. John’s (Hawera) Institute held its fourth meeting. In the absence of Mr L. A, Taylor, Mr :C. Lamb presided. After a short musical programme, including pianoforte solos by Mr C. Laurent, Mrs Bone dnd Miss Ailsa Glen, and a recitation by Miss Una Miles, a debate was held. The subject was: ‘'Which is the Better; Homemade Music or Wireless?” Mrs Bone acted as chairman and Mr Lamb adjudicated. 'The debate, which was a very lively one, was opened >by Miss Rose Duff, who, with her colleagues (Mr Olive Lacey and Miss Una Miles), vigorously affirmed that the wireless and the gramophone far exceeded homemade music. The leader of . the negative side, Mr Bruce Watts, supported by Miss Ailsa Glen and Mr J. Clapham, proceeded to denounce wireless vehemently. The decision of the adjudicator was in favour of the affirmative side. Tie debate was then thrown open for general discussion, and Mr O. Laurent and the Rev. Evans gave some very interesting and helpful information. The prose reading competition which was to have taken place on Wednesday has been postponed until June 22. Competitors, wishing to take part in the above, or in the oratorical contest, are asked to, communicate as soon as possible with Mr L. A. Taylor, or the secretary, Mr Bruce Watts.
