TARIFFS AGAINST CANADA
LUMBER AND COPPER TRADE. AMERICAN EMBARGOES. (United Pre33 Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) WASHINGTON, May 23. The Senate to-night voted virtual embargoes against Canadian lumber and copper. The duty on lumber was raised from a dollar to three dollars per thousand broad feet. Hardwood flooring was exempted from the duty. A tariff of 4 cents per pound was placed on copper. The increases are provided for in the £200,000,000 revenue bill, and unless they are removed when the Bill goes to a compromise between the House of Representatives and the Senate Canada stands to lose trade that was worth £5,600,000 last year.
