SUCCESS OF HAWERA SCHEME. PRODUCTIVITY O'F SOIL. Illustrating the productivity of Bawera soil, but more particularly the results of careful cultivation a return has been prepared of the crops gro.vn on the borough reserve of tlireequartes of an acre in area in Albion Street, near the water tower, under the community garden scheme promoted last spring for the benefit of the unemployed. The value of all the crops, at a conservative estimate, is assessed iat £4O. In all, two Tons of onions were grown and these were valued at £l2 10s per ton. Considerably more than two tons, of potatoes were harvested but actually there were two tons saleable at £5 "os per ton. Other vegetables taken off the section included 100 pumpkins averaging six pounds weight apiece at Id per lb, and 500 cabbages at Id each. There were other reserves on which production was equally polific, namely the railway and Tnruturu-Mokai reserves, but returns for these so far are not available. The work of preparing the soil, planting, cultivating and harvesting the crops was undertaken by the unemployed under the No. 5 scheme of relief with expert supervision.
