The new Sunday School at St Barnabas’ Anglican Church was officially opened yesterday afternoon in the presence of a good gathering; of parishioners and well-wishers. He stated that parishioners should congratulate themselves on possessing such a fine build, ino- and made appreciative reference to the* ereat> work crone by the Ladies Guild in raising the necessary funds For many years the Ladies Guild ha been steadily working and had raised a great deal of money, but it had unfortunately often been necessary to divert the money to other purposes However disappointing this must have been he continued, the ladies nad kept steadily on and, as was often the case, had had their way in the end. He stressed the value of Sunday School work to the church and the community and contrasted the present day cheerful co-operation of pupils and teachers with the Spartan methods employed m the past, when the text book ruled. Though he himself had not taken any direct interest in the Sunday School lii the past the late Mrs Feaver and his daughter, the late Miss N. Feaver, had its interests very much at heart and had assisted for "many years. In conelusion he appealed for an enlarged attendance to fill the greatly increased accommodation now available. The building was then formally declared open. , , Mr W. L. F. Chambers also spoke endorsing, the remarks of the previous speaker. , , ~ Rev. J. G. Wheatley, on behalf of the Presbyterian Church in Opunake, congratulated the parishioners of St. Barnabas Church on their valuable acquisition, which should he an excellent centre of social work besides serving. its main purpose in the training of children for church membership in the future. During the afternoon a sale of work was held in the new building by members of tlie Ladies’ Guild, the wellladen stalls doing good business. Those in charge of the stalls were asi iollow: Needlework, Mesdames Julian and Sorenson and Miss Lewin; produce, Mesdames F. Hammond and El. McCollum; sweets, Mesdames J. N. Stephenson and R. Urbahn. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames H. Mantey and D. Thomas, while Mrs Malcolm rendered an enjoyable musical programme. Preparations are in hand for the annual spring flower show held under tlie auspices of the Presbyterian Ladies Guild, and judging by the quality of the blooms to be seen in some local gardens this year’s function should provide a fine exhibition. Despite the severe winter, spring flowers are well forward and of vej’y good quality.
