BOWES REJECTED

SURPRISE FOR* CITY PLAYERS

Twelve howls were rejected before the champion of champions rinks games at Wellington on Wednesday. Players’ had assembled on the green ready to commence play when the umpire,* Air C. Barv, c-alled for all howls to be put down for inspection to see if they bore the Dominion stamp of 1926 or later, as required Iby the rules. When the rale had been run over them it was found tlrait* 1.2 howls did not bear the .required stamp, and the owners were debarred from using them, being loaned howls by members of the Wellington Club. The clubs concerned were Jchnsonrille, Khandaillah and Seatoun. It is evident that some of the clubs or -members arc still lax in observing the rule, for some of the. howls condemned had been used in previous competitions, despite the warnings given generally, and to individual club* by the centre in November last (states the, “Dominion.”) An incident which happened in the centre too rument- at Christmas and Now Year, when a bowler was disqualified) in one game f-or using a. narrow bowl, also was a warning. Laxity on the part of any other umpires on other occasions did hot- prevent the umpire yesterday in seeing that the rules were observed.

A. report will Ibei made to the centre, and definite steps may he taken to see that in future- competitive games the rules shall ho strictly observed. The -onus will probably be placed on club officials to see that bowls are stamped and otherwise in order.
