FODDER FOR STOCK
DRY SPELL IN HAWKE’S BAY. LOWER RAILWAY RATES. (By Telegraph—Ficsa Association.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 23. On production of a certificate signed by an officer of the Department of Agriculture, hav, straw, in bales, chaff, turnips', mangels and green fodder purchased by bona-fide farmers and to be used exclusively by the consignee for keeping alive stock starving by reason of the dry spell in the Hawke’s Bay' district, will be carried at half tlie classified rates from stations on the North Island main Tine and branches to stations between Dannevirke and Napier inclusive. Hawke’s Bay, always a dry province between tlie stations mentioned at this time of the year, has experienced a particularly dry season and stock has been selling at very low prices. The unusual i shortage of feed wits very evident to those visiting Hawke’s Bay during the I earthquake period. Botli the condition of stock and their listlessness attested Ito the lack-of feed on the baked lnllI sides of the pastoral area.
