HIGHWAYS CONTROL
ELTHAM COUNTY DISCUSSION. NEW WORK NOT FAVOURED. A suggestion, made in a circular from the Awatere County Council and received hy* the Eltham County meeting on oaturday, that no new worn be undertaken oil main highways, was accorded 1 strong support by the meeting. Ci-. Carter said it was a good thing not to expend money on new works, but to look after what has been done. The circular also stressed the need of Highways funds being given to local bodies and of economy by Government departments. “The Government,” said! the chairman (Cr. A. L. Campbell), “lias been told of these things repeatedly without result.” Cr. Carter; “We must follow this up or get nowhere.’’ He considered an example should be set by Cabinet Ministers aiid members of Parliament. “If every- county,” he added, ‘‘forwarded resolutions, it would show the state of public opinion.” Or Knuckey : “If we sit down and sav nothing, we shall get no result.” “The Government should have given a. lead,” said Cr. Carter. Cr. McGuinness maintained that this should 1 have been done a week after the crisis arose. It was agreed to endorse the resolutions. A suggestion made by WaitaKx County Council that a conference of local bodies be cabled, because of .the serious economic position was received ;incl allowed to lie on the table.
