Arrangements for the engagement of 70 moil this week under the Unemployment Board’s No. 5 relief scheme were made by the Haw-era committee oil Saturday- evening. ‘Ttventy-six of the men are of the four-day cliTss and 24 of the ohree-day and 20 of the two-day classes respectively-. The total working days thus divided for the week is 202.

The work lias been arranged by- the Hawera Borough 'Council, the Hawera County- 'Council, the Hawera School Committee, and the Normanby Town Board and the Normanby School Committee. Tn addition, six men were detailed to report to the Waimate West County Council at lAJanaia to-day.

■SCHEME NO. 2. ‘‘The position with scheme No. 5 is that it cannot apply until the individual has been registered for 14 days,” said the secretary of the committee, Air .1. E>. Campbell, to a “11awera Star” reporter. “Consequently those registering- at present have to wait for that period before they become eligible for engagement under scheme No 5 and work under scheme No. 2, which applies immediately on registration, is still urgently needed.” Air Campbell explained further that there were a considerable number, many of whom had been out of work for lengthy periods, who were now being tompeiled to seek the aid of the committee and any .further offers of employment under the subsidised scheme No. 2 would bo appreciated.

Last week the committee was able to arrange the allocation of 12'SA working days among a total of 36 men. the respective periods of work ranging from half a day to 12 days.

SCHEME, NO. 4 A Air Campbell stated that a number of inquiries had been received concerning the Board’s scheme No. 4A. It was expected to come into operation next week, but no official intimation had as yet ‘been received by the committee and until that arrived no action could be taken. Under scheme No. 4 A, as explained nt New Plymouth on Friday by the Alinistcr of Labour, a farmer who engages extra labour may receive a maximum subsidy of 15s weekly on wages paid to a single man, and 25s weekly on a married “man's wages, the actual rate of pay being a matter for agreement between employer and employee. The object is to aid development work which might not otherwise be undertaken and the scheme will apply only in genuine cases of extra labour.
