There were Iso sundry private gatherings, but the town itself was almost as dead as 3.930 at 12 midnight. Shades of old Opunake—thy glory has indeed! departed! Now Year's Day, however, saw a different, state of affairs for the beach was crowded with boliday-makers for file second gala day organised by the Surf Club in aid of the funds of the Seaside Society and the Surf Club. Some idea of the crowd assembled may be gained from the fact that there were close on 300 cars parked on the beach and on the cliff top. The day was spent very pleasantly in surf and sun-bathing and for those- more indolently inclined in lolling about in the Full enjoyment of doing nothing. . For the amusement of the crowd various diversions had been organised and things were kept moving merrily until the call of the cows steadily thinned out the crowd.
