MEMORIES OF THE WAR
GIRL FROM ARMENTIERES
Memories of tlhe war and of one of the most famous of British army songs —“Mademoiselle from Armentieres”— are recalled by the mysterious death of Mlee. Laure Millanauet at La Chapelle d’Armentieres. She was aged 44 years. In 1914 and 1915 she was a beautiful young woman, the centre of attraction in the little billeting village behind the British lines where she had taken refuge. Mile. Millanquet had lived alone since the war, and it was whispered locally that she was mourning for some young lover who had been killed. Certainly she refused many offers of marriage and rarely left her solitary house.
When the woman was found dead it was thought that ishe had committed 'suicide. Police investigations have led them tq doubt this theory, and a search is being made for a man who, it is said, was seen to leave her house the night before her death was discovered.
