FARMERS’ UNION
ALTON BRANCH FORMED. LECTURE PY MR. SMITH. For a, considerable time it has been thought by residents of Alton that they should have a branch of the Farmers’ Union and this was made an accomplished fact last night when there was an attendance of 46 from Alton, Kakaramea and Manutahi. Mr E. J. Betts, president of the South Taranaki executive, was present with Mr C. J. Harris, district organisation, tlio former taking the chair. Mr Harris addressed the meeting on the aims and objects of the union, and gave special attentinon to the manner in which the union directly assisted; members. It was then resolved to- form a branch and the following were elected officials : President. Mr H.. Hodge ; vice-presidents, Messrs P. W. Tong and L. J. Hunt; honorary secretary, Mr A. Taylor; committee, Messrs H. A. Sutherland, P. S. Tarrant, A. H. Ward, J. P. Oakley, G. F. Bernand, J. Smitheram, and W. E. Taylor. In taking the chair. Mr Hodge gave a cordial welcome to visitors and expressed keen approval of the enthusiasm shown by all present. He thanked Mr Betts and Mr Harris for the interest taken in the work of the union and expressed great satisfaction with tlie number of young farmers present, which augured well for the future of the branch.
A lecture with lantern slides was then given by Messrs J. M. Smith and J. W. Palmer, of the Department of Agriculture, the subject being “Ensilage making andi storing.’’ It was followed very- closely by /ill and at the conclusion a number of questions were asked and answered, which provoked much useul discussion.
A dainty- supper was provided bymembers of the Women’s Division and a hearty vote of thanks wa;s tendered them for their kindly attention and carried by acclamation.
