DESTROYED BY FIRE
SHOPS AND OFFICES GUTTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 23. An arcade in Esk Street, a large twostoried brick building containing shops and offices, was completely gutted bv fire at 1.30 o’clock this morning. The outbreak started in the shop of T. H. Brewer, a fruit dealer, and spread with great rapidity. The other tenants were D. R. Kelly (tailor), J. Boyd (land agent), It. J. Gumming (insurance agent), AVairio Coal Company, Southland Silver Beech Co., Radio Club, Girls’ Club rooms, and the State Fire Insurance office. The premises wore owned by Colonel Cowie Nicliolls, of Oamaru, and were insured for £9OOO. The tenants were mostly insured for small amounts.
OLD HOTEL RAZED. DUNEDIN, Oct, 23. The Bridge Hotel at Beaumont, intimately associated with the early history of the province, was completely destroyed by fire last evening. It is thought that a fused wire caused the outbreak and as the old building is entirely woouon it was wiped out in 30 minutes.
The few boarders escaped with barely their clothes. The hotel was owned by Air Edward Pearson anrl occupied by Mr .1. H. Jones. Insurances on the building was for £3300 and on. the contents for £I2OO.
