FUND'S FOR PROPAGANDA CLERK’S CLAIM IN COURT (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 2.3. In the Magistrate’s Court .Tames Arnold, a clerk, claimed to recover from Leonard Smith, of Colombo Street, Christchurch, described as tlie president of the Christchurch branch of the Dominion Sportsmen's Association, £IOO allegedly paid to defendant for the purposes of helping the association to carry on propaganda work to get, bookmakers I icensed.
Plaintiff's counsel said lie was one of five who lent money on the understanding he would get it back When the association had sufficient funds. Plaintiff said he paid £IOO to the late Peter Grant when approached for funds. After plaintiff had given evidence, counsel for defendant submitted that there was no case against Smith personally, as Smith was not in Christchurch at the times when the money was alleged to have been paid. The magistrate upheld counsel’s contention and non-suited plaintiff.
