PATEA.

.BOROUGH COUNCIL

WORK OP THE MONTH

The monthly meeting of the Patea Borough Council was held) on Monday, the Mayor (Mr P. Ramsbottcm) presiding. The electrical engineer’s 1 report showing record output figures' for the Patea plant ovas adopted. Both power.stations had continued to run in a satisfactory manner with the necessary maintenance and a few minor repairs, and! nn interruption in the supply had occurred. The Diesel station- had been carrying the bulk of the load and had generated 19,532 units for a running time of 324 hours and a consumption of 1*477 gallons of fuel oil, while the hydro, had generated 14,090 units for a running time of 452 hours; both plants having generated 33,1622 units for the month, compared with 30,71® units for August, 1.1929, am increase of 2904 units. The new casting for the turbine hacU arrived and! would be installed during the annual overhaul. 'With regard' to interference, at the hydro, the boy concerned had boon brought before the magistrate, who; rcprimaruled and discharged him. The magistrate had pointed out the seriousness of trespass and especially of interfering with property. •In addition to the usual maintenance several alterations had been carried out to extend the 23'0-volt, supply and five consumers' had been changed l to the 230-volt; mains. .Alterations to give 230-volt supply to more consumers were well under way and tvouTd be completed as opportunity offered. Owing to voltage regulation being rather poor on the linos centred around Cambridge and. Devon Streets it was intended; to erect a sub-station to feed, that district. The cost, would bo £SO for the lime over from Norfolk Street. In the meantime thereswas a small transformer available, but the council would have to consider the purchase of a larger •one.

During' the period 2S lighting and four heating points had been rewired and a service put into » milking shed. A range, a water heater, 25 lighting and eight heating points bad been tested' and connected to '230-volt mains.

As the Tvakarain'ea factory 'was in need of a. larger motor the 40-li.p. motor driving one of the pumps had been removed to tins factory and the 25-li.p. motor coupled' to the pump. That had 1 resulted ;im a very .satisfactory arrangement to both parties as the '25-h.p. motor delivered more water, being designed for a- .higher speed. Originally the pump was a six stage ail'd required the larger motor. Approximately 1,227.000 gallons’ of wafer had. been pumped for a> consumption of 3880 units. It had: been impossible to measure the how of the bores in August as the daily consumption of water had been such that it was impossible' to lower the tank sufficiently to ta'ke flic flow. Three bursts in the mains had become apparent on the morning of August 2. and these had been: repaired the same morning. The leaks were fairly old. but could not be found until the water broke through' the surface. The continued demand for in'ereased electrical service and the consequent overloading of the borough electrical plant, madie the question of securing more power urgent. Electrical device,s of alt types were sought by consumers, pa rt ic u ia’rly ranges. —Toll coving some discussion it was decided to ask the South Taranaki Power Board far an immediate supply of 200 kilowatts. The borough foreman reported: that Grey Street, and Albany Street had been reformed and Norfolk Street and Oxford Street had. been repaired. Main streets and sumps -had been kept clean regularly through the month. Rubbish carting had been carried out. Work suggested for 'September was Oxford Street to be metalled, Warwick Street to be patched. Egniont Street south "to.be continued metalling, painting at. Town Hall fences, potholes to be fiMedi in at 'Cambridge Street.

GENERAL.

Hollowing discussion on fire insurance on' borough properties under the Glasgow lease it was resolved that all lessees he notified that policies would be renewed in the joint nam'es of the council and the lessee. The Patea Blanket Society branch expressed its appreciation of the work ■done in beautifying the society’s quarters. A donation of £5 5s was made to the. cancer research campaign in Wellington, part, of a Dominion scheme. A f resolution regarding the Opaku Reserves was carried unanimously, protesting against the proposal to take the funds from 1 Taranaki -and considering that, the commission’s - proposal was a distinct breach of faith. The Pateai School 'Committee’s request for water for the swimming baths was granted 'subject to the discretion. 'Details concerning a power generating plant for the protection plant at the Town Hall were discussed with the theatre manager (Mr R. Haddow). 'lt was decided that the installation of electrical plant to replace the benzine engine should be effected forthwith.
