MEETING OF COUNCIL

There were present- at the monthly meeting of tlio Patea County Council yesterday Cfis. AV. G. Relton (chairman) AV. H. AA r atkiiis, F. Johnston, AA\ Back, D. Peat, A. J. Gibbs, R, S. Scown, J, T. Watt, and T. Lupton.

ENGINEER’S RiEPORT

The engineer (Mr L. P. Rowe) reported for the month as follows : Kapara, Riding.—The formation contract on the Lower A\ 7 aitotara Valley Road has been satisfactorily completed, and steady progress is being made with other contracts on this road. Contracts in connection with the Matemate Road are progressing satisfactorily, but slips are causing some trouble on the completed sections. The surveys for the coming formation programme have been completed and the plans are now being prepared, Moumahaki Riding.—General maintenance work only has: been carried out in this riding.

Waverley Riding.—Sections of shell rock metalling have been completed on the Division and Moturoa Roads, and sections of pit metal have been laid on New land’s, Blake’s, Parahaki, Karahake, , Peat and Rangikura Station Roads. A dangerous corner on the Karabake Road lias been improved by widening and straightening the alignment.

Otoin East.—Two sections of metalling have been completed on Chinaman’s; Road and two sections on Baker’s Road. The south approach to the railway overhead bridge on Baker’s Road has been built iup and metalled. A, section of light metalling has been laid on Tinney’s Rioad'. Approximately 12 chains of the Lower Knharoa Rond has been scarified, reshaped and lightly metalled in readiness for sealing.

Otoin. AA r est. —Metal patching has been carried out on Mountain, Ta.umalia, Petch and Lower Rail Roads, and several wet sections have been sanded on 'McKenna’s Road. Mct-nA for several roads .in this riding has been on order for some weeks, but so far lias not come to hand.

Main 'Road. —Genera], surface repairs have been carried out over the whole ■length and' earth is boulders have been built- up in several places. A: short length of re-sealing with on Id emulsified bitumen has been put down near the Tvohi Road corner.

MOTOR, LORR Y SPEEDS

Messrs S. A. Oouchman,. It. Bates and \Y\ O. Glenny, Ltd., applied for an increase of the .speed, limit of their lorries, as, provided in Section VI. of the Motor Lorry Regulations. C. Sturgaker applied for permission to operate a. motor lorry carrying perishable goods at a greater speed than allowed under the regulations. The chairman said that the regulation as to speed had been badly abused, and it was found that- some were going tin to 40 miles per hour. It was resolved,, after some discussion. that the rates of sneed allowed be: Grades A to E, 30 miles per (hour; F to f. 24 miles; others (heavier), 20 miles.

GENERAL

Mr T. T. Foreman asked lor six chains of metal on bis load. Manutahi Extension, because it had got into a very bad condition. He added that a narrower strip of metal would suffice. —lt was decided to reply that the estimates bad been prepared and closed and the work could not be done at present. Mr R. Bates. Wnvorloy, wrote to say that owing to the increased cost of petrol and oil and of lorry tyres the cost of running bis motor lorries oil the metal carting contract had considerably increased. At the time of tender the increase could not bp anticipated. and lie asked the council to consider an increased payment to him nuclei- the contract to meet the increased cost. He asked for an increase of 2d per mile per yard.—The matter was deferred. The chairman and Or Feat were empowered to sign contracts on behalf of the council. Permission was given to a ratepayer on the Waitotara River to erect a post nil the bank to bold a cable by which cream could be taken across flic river. —The work is to be clone to the satisfaciion of the engineer, the ratepayer to take all responsibility and to have the nost- painted white.

The secretary of the "Wellington division of the New Zealand branch of the British Campaign Society asked for a donation towards the appeal to raise £25,000 towards the amount

Zealand about one person in nine died of cancer and that, therefore, such a . movement should be strongly and . widely supported. The Premier acknowledged receipt ot | a letter from the council urging that the Patea area should be taken out of the South Taranaki Electric Power Board’s area.. . Mr Edward Wilson was appointed traffic inspector for the county, pursuant to a. resolution Of the council. An application to erect accommodation yards on the Lower Waitotara Valley Hoad was granted, subject to 7 approval of Cr Peat. [.
