FOREIGN LEGION MUTINY
POSSIBLE CAFFARD EFFECT. AUCKLANDER’S IMPRESSIONS. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 26. With reference to the London cable regarding the Foreign Legion mutiny, an Auckland resident who was in the legion 16 years ago said that the mutiny might be caused by a lack of water or food, too much continued active service,, or perhaps the caffard (the madness brought on by heat and monotony). It seemed to him that the mutiny report was exaggerated, for it was unlikely that the whole battalion would mutiny. Since the war there had been a large influx of Russians, and possibly Soviet propaganda had something to do with it.
