MOUNTAIN FATALITIES

MEMBER’S QUESTION IN HOUSE. LICENSING OF GUIDES. (By Telegraph—Special to “The Star.") WELLINGTON, Aug. 6. Two suggestions for reducing the risks of accidents in mountaineering were made by Mr. T. D. Burnett (Temuka) in the course of a question in the House. These were: (1) Giving authority to managers of mountain resorts to stop all parties venturing out in dangerous weather; (2) licensing as alpine guides only men of mature judgment and not less than 25 years of age, and with at least three guarantors of fitness, both physical and mental. He suggested that the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Minister in charge of the Tourist and Health Resorts Department take into consideration the urgent necessity that, exists for his department to issue licenses to experienced alpine guides to men in charge of deer-stalking parties and men generally in charge of holiday parties in alpine country.
