CHINESE DISTRESS.
RELIEF FUNDS OPENED LOCALLY. In connection with the present situation in China, where millions of the people are starving as the result of the famine, lists have been opened at the Borough Council and County Council offices for the convenience of townspeople and resident® of the district who may wish to contribute to the relief of the distress. The decision to open these lists follows as the result of a telegram received this morning by the Mayor (Mr E. A. Pacey) from the Mayor of Wellington (Mr Troup). The latter’s message was as follows: —< “Estimate number of famine victims in China at 16,000,000. Immediate financial assistance is desired, and the Chinese Consul here is appealing to his countrymen and receiving generous support, Have opened a relief fund here, and the National Missionary Council of the Dominion is approaching the Churches to arouse interest. The Prime Minister has offered to arrange for the transmission of funds collected, and he would be pleased if you will co-operate and open a relief fund fo y°hr district.”
