HALF-HOLIDAY QUESTION.
EXECUTIVE OF HAWERA RETAILERS. TO OPPOSE PROPOSAL FOR CHANGE.
A meeting of the executive of the Ha we r a Retailers’ Association was held yesterday, at .which there were present: Messrs L. A. Bone (chairman), B. Bennett, Lester, Westaway, Nelson, Crompton, 'Shackleton. J. C. Smith, and the secretary, Mr R. S. Sage. The meeting discussed the proposal to change the weekly half-holi-day, its attention having been called to this matter by a petition which is being circulated and which is - asking the Borough Council to cause a p<jll to be taken to determine -on which day the weekly half-holiday shall be held. Every member expressed his entire disapproval, of any change, considering that from every point of tew the midweek holiday such as Wednesday as ideal. Members considered such a change would be sucidal as far as Hawera was concerned, this being a trading and not a manufacturing centre. The executive decided to convene a meeting of all business people at an early date, with a vi6w of taking immediate steps to combat and defeat the N agitation for a change. The secretary stated that there was quite a substantial credit balance from the last fighting funds and which is available for fighting to retain Wednesday.
