Mr. and Mrs. 'John Houston returned to Haivera on Sunday evening, after a motor trip tq some of the cold lakes and gold -diggings in the South Island.

Winks were passengers for Wellington by the mail train this morning on business connected with the Dairy Control Board.

Mr and Mrs W. Smith, of Hataitai, Wellington, who are on a motor tour of the. North Island, are guests at the White Hart Hotel during their stay in Hawera.

Mr and Mrs L. Preece, of Matapu, left by car yesterday to visit the Rotorua district.

Mr H. K. Whittington and Miss A. Whittington, of Hawera, who, with Mr Whittington’s two grandson®, have been on a holiday visit to Wellington, returned to Hawera last evening.

Arrangements have been made for a public presentation to Mr. J. G. Elliott, ex-M.P. for Oroua, at Feilding on February 5. The leader of the Opposition, R-t. Hon. J. G. Coates, the Minister of Marine, Hon. J. G. Cobb. Mr. Rl. A. Wright, M.P., and Mr. F. J. Rolleston, ex-M.P. for Timaru, have been invited to attend. After practising in Wanganui for 45 years, Mr. Giffo.rd Marshall, of the legal firm of Marshall, Izard and Bar- | ton, has announced his retirement. Mi*. Marshall came to Wanganui in 1877 and wa s articled to Mr. S. T. Fitzherbert. He was admitted to the Bar in 1883 and became a member of the firm of Fitzherbert and Marshall. He sub-' s-equently carried on business as a member of the firm of Marshall and Hutton, and of the one from which he is now retiring. For 20 years he was Crown Solicitor, which office he relinquished in 1926. Mr. W. H. Cunningham being appointed in his stead.
