EMPLOYMENT OF BOYS.
LABOUR DEPARTMENT’S EFFORTS. JUVENILE EXCHANGES PROPOSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 12. The Minister of Labour, the Hon. W. A. Veitch, has issued' a statement in which he said: “The Department of Labour lias already; made an endeavour throughout its various branches to establish exchanges through which particulars of bays leaving school and desiring employment were obtained, and employers requiring the services,of boys were invited to apply for the labour they might require. The response from the employers to 1 the invitations issued had so far been very small, the reason no doubt being due to the trade depression. Moreover it was understood that most employers had their own waiting lists of boys and made their own engagements. Recently it was thought, however, that a comprehensive system should, if possible, be instituted by means of the establish, ment of juvenile labour employment exchanges and the department had been instructed to make inquiries accordingly. Voluntary organisations that have been interesting themselves, such as chambers of commerce, Rotary club, Y.M.'C.A., etc., will be invited to cooperate with the Departmental officers in setting up local committees.”
