HOLIDAY TRAFFIC.
PASSENGERS BY RAIL. The stationmaster at Hawera reports that business at the station, especially passenger traffic has been exceedingly heavy and all trains being well patronised, local as well as express. From Monday morning until Wednesday evening 586 passengers had hooked at Hawera for various stations. The staff have had a very busy and strenuous time. The mail train from Wellington on Saturday was one of the largest and heaviest that has ever come through. It was much delayed in arrival. No less than seven hundred passengers were aboard and there were nineteen carriages with two engines and two vans.
The staff have shown the utmost expedition in dealing with this extra traffic, and their efforts have been much appreciated by travellers.
