HAWERA GOLF CLUB.

ANNUAL BALL. A BRILLIANT SUCCESS. With the recollection pf last year’s success in mind, the committee of the Hawera Ladies’ and Men’s Golf Club some time ago resolved to make the ball an annual fixture. This year’s function was held at the V inter Show buildings last night, and was in ever' wav a great success. Visitors from the Waveriey, Patea, Manaia, Qpunake, Eltliam, New Plymouth, Stratford, and Kaponga clubs were present, and this representative character made the fixture most enjoyable. The committee had worked out an elaborate scheme of decorations in the dancing hall, the approach, the sitting rooms and the supper room. Coming in at the outside door the visitor entered a promenade laid out like a shrubbery, with clumps of greenery looking like ornamental trees —bamboos, cabbage palms, and tree ferns being used to secure the effect. At the furtlTer end, just before coming to the staircases, was an arch of green-; ery, interspersed with red flowers, giving an artistic effect. Then one walked up” the stairs through a maze of palms and ferns, with a forest of them at the top, and all along were rows ov brilliant .lights, all hung with shades. In the ballroom, suspended from the ceiling were, in the central arch,, a row of Chinese lanterns with a miniature pagoda, in the centre, and down each side the lights, nine in each row, were shaded by dainty little Japanese sunshades, vari-coloured, presenting a very pretty effect. .On the walls at each end were spread four huge fans ■of different colours, giving a unique appearance to the walls. All along the side walls were hung or spread palms, ferns, and other types of. greenery, while the platform on which the orchestra sat was covered -with flags. The scheme was a tribute to -the designers. Passing along the lower floor one came to°a huge drawing room, richly carpeted and provided with numerous easy chairs and couches for sitting out between dances. The accommodation for the supper tables was elaborately provided for. The ceiling was gaily hung with long streamers jof green land tangerine, looped up in the centre and giving an artistic effect. Along the northern wall was one dong table, on which the supper dishes were laid, the table being effectively and prettily decorated with autumn blooms. The main part of that hall was covered with a host of small .tables, seating four .each, about two 'hundred being enabled to sit down at one time. The walls .and the dividing partitions were gay with bunting of all nations, making a pretty foil to the greenery surrounding on all sides. The arrangements were most complete, and well planned and carried through by a large committee of the ladies’ and men’s clubs, under the general direction of Mrs. Page and the president and secretary. All co-operated in securing the success that was achieved. The guests were received by the president (Mr. IV. O’Callaghan) ’and Mrs. O’Gallaghan Members of the committee and the honorary secretary (Mr. E. P. Cox) looked efficiently after visitors. Good music was supplied by Barton’s orchestra, and this was appreciated by the dancers. Everything combined ‘to make the evening thoroughly enjoyable to the large company present.
