OPERA HOUSE. “MY BEST GIRL.” STARRING MARY PICKFORD. At the Opera House laist evening the initial screening of the film, “My Best Girl,” starring Mary Pi.cklord, was shown to a large attendance. The stoi-y opens with the famous •actress in the role qf a live and ten cent store salesgirl, Maggie Johnson, and whilst working there a new employee, Joe Grant, with whom -she falls .in love. Joe Grant is really the son of the owner,of the store, who had been sent out to .work up , a name for himself ,and he came to love liis helper, Maggie. Joe Grant was isupposed to attend a party at which his engagement to his mother’s choice’, Millioent, was to be announced, hut he preferred to take the shop girl to supper. Mjarrilil senr., owner ol the store, had a slogan, “We’re all one .big family,’ and his son Joe decided to take him at his word and, go to the house for isupper. The butler, recognising his master’s son, allows supper to be set for two, but in the midst of the enjoyment ;the family return together with the disappointed! Millicent. Maggie sees ..she iia in the wrong company and excuses herself. Young Merrill chases her and locates her at the night court, where she is endeavouring to assist her isister, who had become tangled with the misdeeds of a crook. Joe, in defending his name, causes an uproar in the court, and! the papers are full of the scandal. Merrill senr., visits Maggies home and offers her a cheque or the chance to marry his son and to go to Honolulu. She says the cheque was all she was after, but the two Merrills knew she was saying it only because of the wrong social standing. Eventually misunderstandings are removed and the happy couple make a last-minute dash for the boat. It is a picture bubbling with mirth, and yet has the pathos that only an actress such as Mary Pickford 1 can infuse into it. M Mv Best Girl,” together with the supporting pictures, will be shown again this evening. GRAND THEATRE, TO-NIGHT. “THE PIONEER, SCOUT.”. Fred Thomson, action, star of “Jessie James” is suiperb in his role of relay scout in the Paramount attraction, “The Pioneer Scout,” which will bo screened .to-night at the Grand! Theatre for the last time. ‘ ‘The Pioneer Scout” is a Western story of the period of about 1850, and shows the thrilling experiences of the relay scouts who guided waggon trains across .the plains and through the mountains in spite of hostile Indians and desperadoes left in the wake of the gold rush. Nora Lane is the leading woman, she also appeared with “Fred Thomson in “Jessie. James.” Others in the east are Tom Wilson and William Courtriglht. There is an excellent supporting programme and an orchestra will be in attendance.
