MID-CANTERBURY SEAT.

RIEIQUEST TO' HON. W. NOSAVORTHY TO STAND.

A COMPLICATED POSITION,

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) ASHBURTON, July 27

A petition containing over five hundred names was presented to the Hon. W. Nosworthy at a public meeting last evening asking him to reconsider his expressed intention, not to contest the Mid-Canterbury seat. Mr No-swortby said that seeing that Mr David Jones had announced his canditature he did not wish to appear mean or to court office. The position now seemed very much complicated and it was a question whether Mr Jones would seek another electorate, which of course ,he would have had to do if the speaker had said he .would stand when the electorates were first amalgamated. Perhaps Mr Jones had made his arrangements for the campaign . Mr Noswoirthy promised careful consideration of the request before leaving for Canada and would try to- accede to it.
