KAPONGA NOTES.

BAND CONCERT. The sacred concert under the aus-; pices of the Kaponga Municipal Band, held in the Town Hall on Sunday, was in every way successful. The majority of the contributors to a first-class programme were Hawera artists, who had to respond to vociferous encores to every member rendered liefore a large and ‘ appreciative audience. Air. A. Melville occupied the chair. The band’s contribution to the pro-o-ram me, under the leadership of Conductor F. Kear, comprised: Quick march, “Invercargill”; hymn; selection (fantasia), “Tasma” ; quick march, “Good Queen Bess”; hymn, “Abide With Ale”: quick march, “Route Alarch” ; and. the National Anthem. The band’s marked improvement formed the subject of general comment. The remainder of the programme consisted"of a euphonium solo, “Sandhurst,” hv Air. M. Feak (Stratford), and vocal’items as follows: Solo, “Remember now Thy Creator,” Air. C. Lamb (Hawera); contralto ’solo, “The Lord is My Shepherd,” Miss Dunn (Hawera); soprano solo, “I Know That Mr Redeemer Liveth.” from “The Alessiah,” Aliss Alurdoch (Hawera); bass solo. Air. G. S. W. Bell . (Kaponga); duet, “Lead, Kindly Light,” Aliss Dunn and Air. Lamb. The accompaniments were played by Misses AI. Evans (Kaponga) and Murdoch (Hawera) and Air. L. Rowe (Hawera). At the conclusion of the concert, Air. Melville conveyed the thanks of the Kanonga Band, to visiting vocalists from Hawera and bandsmen from Stratford and Alanaia, whose united efforts had provided a m-qsical treat and incidentally augmented the financial resources of the local hand. Mr. Melville algo, apologised for the unavoidable absence of Miss Brooker (Eltham). band visit to hospital. On Sunday afternoon a lengthy and much appreciated programme of selections was rendered by the band at the , Kaponga Hospital grounds, at which there was a large attendance of the public, VALEDICTORY.

On AVednesday evening last Air. J. F Ryan, mine host of the Dominion Hotel, Kaponga, for the past two years, with Mrs. Ryan and their son Maurice, were entertained at the residence of Air. J. Steiner by the. Swiss settlers of the surrounding district. There was a. muster of fhlly 50 wellwishers to- bid farewell to the guests of the evening prior to their departure for Stratford, and with dancing, music, song and story a very enjoyable gather-

ing eventuated. During the evening Air. Steiner, on behalf of the*, assemblage, presented Airs. Ryan with a Irand-some jardiniere and cut-glass vase, Air. Ryan with a pair of military hair brushes, and Master Maurice Ryan with appropriate toys, and conveyed to them the best wishes of the Swiss settlers of the district for their future well-being.

GENERAL. Air. J. F. Ryan and family left Kaponga on Sunday last for their new home in Stratford, where Mr. Ryan has taken over the Commercial Hotel. Mr. A. E. King, of Waikato, an erstwhile resident of Kaponga, is paying a short business visit) to the district, and incidentally renewing numerous old acquaintances. Farmers within a wide radius of Kaponga are at present busily engaged in extensive hedge cutting operations, thereby opening out- a- better view of. the countryside and in many instances greatly reducing the risk of accident on hitherto totally blinded corners and road intersections. This commendable action could well be copied in other parts of South Taranaki. Air. A. E. Gallagher, a son of one of Hawera’s oldest residents, entered into possession of the Dominion Hotel, Kaponga, yesterday. Air. Gallagher, who is a returned soldier and has spent some- yeans in Australia since the war, is well known from boyhood throughout South Taranaki, and looks forward to the renewal of many cherished friendships-. Air. G. R. Smith, a popular resident of Palmer Road, is at present an inmate of the Hawera Hospital. The members of the men’s Star Hockey Club are sparing no effort to make their annual ball, to be held in the Town Hall on Thursday next, a more successful function than any of its predecessors. A first-class orchestra has been epgaged.
