MID-WEEK RUGBY

e CLASH OF LEADERS. CITY AND FRASER ROAD. (.BY “ GFP-iSiDER. ”) Rugby fans who saw Wednesday ! s game in iwiii'eh t'he City fifteen defeated Fraser 'R'o'ad by ■nineteen points to nine should have been well pleased with the standard .and -would not begrudge payment for witnessing such a good game. The scores would indicate that City had an easy victory, but that was not the case. The City forwards made the most of every opportunity (to force the game, while their backs showed some excellent .combination •which resulted in City having the better of the last half hour. The Fraser Road forwards worked hard most of the game and showed good work in fight scrums, but were not quite fast enough in the loose. Perhaps they had City worried in -the lino-out, but the City half (Young) was always there when the Blue forwards came through. The Blue backs did not go as well as [ have seen them. Perhaps faulty passing was their downfall.

Sutton, who played ia good rover’s game, made many good openings for his backs, while A. fvotinnn, his vis-a-vis, played a good game around • the pack.

Morrissey combined well with Watson, who played his second game for City. 1. would like to see this player right, for he goes well. Young went well in the second half, lie used the blind side with great advantage.

Cairncross, at centre, went fairly well. The last try came from his good efforts.

Hart, at full-back, was no't as good

as in the previous game. Perhaps when he gains a little more knowledge he will come good. He gave the followers. a good exhibition of a tackle on Wednesday. Morris, the speedy wing-three-quarter, notched -two . very tine tries and his determined running was the means of Morrissey 's try. Macbeth is improving with every game. His fast following-up gave him two tries.

Cannon and Goodger went well, especially in the line-outs-. The City pack played more as a team rather than striving to shine and no particular forward stood out. Mclntyre played his best game to date. This player uses his head and, although goes hard, is always looking | for his mates ’ chances -of an openings Bumball, the Fraser Boad -full-back, seemed to have a day off. I have seen him play many better games. Me-wall, at second-five-eighths, went fairly well. He made many openings and played with dash, but spoiled -his display by a tendency to hang- on and too much kicking. Pullen played a good game a : t first-five-eights except that he kept close up aiul 'consequently was standing when in' shoulq have been going at top. Otherwise he gave a good exhibition. .Too Pol, at half, was -one of the best backs on the day. He passed smartly and at the right time, though- by someilines trying too much on his own ho spoiled good team work. Broughton played g very good game for his side and was conspicuous throughout.

T. Whareaitu was a good second. He led -many rushes and always kept fee-

hind the ball. This player has a* lot of toe and takes Stopping. Pokau is a good honest 'forward, Who worked hard all the time. His -(try was one of the best. Tawhi, at wing-three-quarter, battled hard, but was lacking in dash and seemed to wonder out of his plaice. We should hoar more of this, iplayed before the end of the season.
