LICENSE REFUSED.

UNFAIR COAIPETITION

The l application of Ohayfc native fishermen for n license to sell fish from an open stand in the streete of Hawera was refused! at the meeting of the Borough Council last night, by a. majority of six to three. Butchers’ shops and fish shops were required by law to Ire dust-proof and flv-proof, and it was pointed out that to allow the fish to be sold from an open stand in the' open street was contrary to the interests of public health. The general public were entitled to the benefits of cheap fish, said another councillor. but the .shopkeepers who complied with the -law of hygiene and fitted their premiss® with expensive appliances appertaining to cleanliness and health must be protected. His Worship the Mayor, in speaking to the motion before the council with regard to the granting of a license, said he clid not want to adopt a .“yes-no” policy, and called for a sliow of hands, with the result that the application was refused bv the majority abovr? stated.
