FRENCH ELECTIONS

VICTORY FOR MODERATION. CONFIDENCE IN POINCARE. LESSONS FROM THE BALLOT. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC. TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (UNITED SERVICE.) PARIS, May 30. The election results show definitely confidence in M. Poincare and liis policy. His supporters number a.t least 340, and shows the most moderate movement of public opinion from the extremes and the Left Centre towards the Right Centre. It is a victory for the elements of moderation and the verdict i# in favour of order an d security at home and abroad. It is thought the restoration of confidence reflected in the financial world will be maintained. The elections show (that France is internally predominantly Republican 'and; anxious to avoid the extremes and exepiriments of any kind.

M. POINCARE’S SUPPORTERS

PARIS, April 30,

Sarramt, in a statement, says that 460 to 612 elected deptuaes have declared themselves to be general supporters! of M. Poincare, who can oontinua’lv depend on a solid body of at least 370 supporters.

GROUPS IN THE NEW CHAMBER

PARIS, May 1

It is not yet possible to estimate accurately the gr ouping of the new Chamber as it contains 28 more Deputies than the last, but the Centre Right is ipparently 338 strong, compared with 169 at the last election, to which is added a good proportion of Radical Socialists who support M. Poincare. The Prime Minister’s chief difficulty in the near future may be resisting pressure from his Right Wing. The notorious red girdle of Parisian Communists will no longer- be vociferous as only nine have been elected instead of seventeen. Those defeated, moreovr, comprise prominent militants such as Marty Garchery and Renaud Jean. The Communists, however, polled largely in the first ballot and the chief reason for their defeat is their refusal to co-operate with the Socialists. Certainly M. Poincare will lie able to continue his plans for France’s financial restoration which is the subject of congratulation on the Bourse and in business quarters.
